While the activity can be somewhat of a closed design brief, in its simplest form, the associated notes will show how the activity may be modified to suit different student groups using both open and closed design approaches.

Design and Technology education focuses on engaging students in Critiquing, Designing and Making.

It is difficult to undertake an activity such as a Land Yacht without first ensuring that knowledge, experience and making skills are matched to the task. One should be able to assume that Year 6/7 have sufficient construction skills to undertake this task.

What then are the areas of learning?

Critiquing;

· Researching past and present information.

· Understanding the interrelated functions of parts in a vehicle.

· Revising, reviewing  and modifying.

Designing;

· Planning and working out the structure and relationship of the parts of  a vehicle.

· Making and discarding ideas, interpreting and experimenting with materials.

· Drawing , visualizing and communicating ideas.

Making;

· Using tools and materials safely to realize a model.

· Combining parts and understanding relationships.

· Understanding systems and interrelationships.

· Working accurately and producing a quality product.

· Accepting changes or modifications.

· Exploring new techniques.
