Masking tape has the advantage of being quick, safe and clean, is flexible, adheres to most materials, and can be painted, decorated and written on.
In using it effectively, remember the immediate two or three millimetres either side of a join contributes most of the adhesion, so press this area well to remove air and increase contact.
Tape more than about 10mm beyond a join is really a waste.
